Sarnath is primarily known because it contains Deer Park, the place where the Buddha gave his first
sermon after attaining Enlightenment. King Ashoka erected this stupa on the spot where it is believed
to have happened, so this is a real pilgrimage site for Buddhists. At one time there was an elaborate
monastery complex in Deer Park, the remains of which can be seen in the foreground.
We got a great tour of Deer Park and its environs, led by the monk who was translating the teachings
at the retreat. It's wonderful to have someone who is both knowledgeable and passionate to introduce
you to holy places like this.
